Automobile: Porsche Unveils 2011 918 RSR Racing Lab

Finally, wait for Porsche fans to have a glimpse of company’s 2011 918 RSR Racing Lab concept is finally over. The brand has unveiled a race-bred version of its 918 Spyder Concept at the 2011 NAIAS. The inspiration for the concept, apart from 918 Spyder, came from 908 long-tail coupe (1969) and the 917 short-tail coupe (1971). Porsche 918 RSR Racing Lab will pack the same drivetrain as the track-proven 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car.

As a result, the hybrid car will come equipped with 6.2-liter V8 that generate a massive 563hp, which is further supported by two electric motors on the front wheels. The electric motors add 204 extra ponies, thus collectively taking the power tally of RSR Racing Lab to 767hp. Engine is mated to six-speed constant-mesh transmission with longitudinally mounted shafts and straight-toothed spur gears that transfer power to the rear wheels.

The other unique features of the 918 6.2-liter V8 RSR include regenerative braking energy in a flywheel accumulator stationed where the passenger seat would traditionally rest. This technology will allow drive to ask for extra power for passing or acceleration and the pilot can also use the boost in grunt for up to eight seconds. On the other, the new concept is dominated by the muscular wheel arches, dynamic air intakes, and a pulpit-like cockpit.
